The California High-Speed Rail Authority's latest attempt to salvage its struggling project is being criticized as a desperate attempt to gaslight the public. Assemblymember Alexandra Macedo (R-Tulare) echoed these concerns, stating that the authority's attempt to rebrand the station as a 'Gateway to Yosemite' is an affront to taxpayers. She emphasized that the High-Speed Rail has been a colossal failure, and taxpayers continue to be swindled.

The authority's recent proposal to shift the station's location from downtown Merced to a more remote area southeast of the city has sparked further controversy. Land-use experts argue that this move abandons the very benefits high-speed rail was supposed to deliver, as a station in the middle of nowhere is often the worst possible outcome.

Merced Mayor Matthew Serratto, however, supports the rebrand, suggesting that it could be marketed as a Merced-Yosemite station. But not everyone in Merced is on board, with city councilmember Darin DuPont calling the proposed change a 'sleight of hand' by the High-Speed Rail Authority.

Despite the criticism, Governor Newsom has been promoting the project as a success story, boasting about the laying of tracks in Wasco. However, the reality is that the project has so far only resulted in a collection of viaducts, overpasses, and other structures scattered across the Central Valley, at a cost of over $15 billion.

As the project continues to face financial and logistical challenges, the authority's latest attempt to rebrand the station in Yosemite appears to be a desperate measure to salvage a project that has become a symbol of California's infrastructure mismanagement.
