The T20 World Cup is just around the corner, and England's captain, Harry Brook, is opening up about his recent experiences, describing them as "horrendous." Reflecting on this tumultuous time, Brook acknowledged that other players were witnesses to his actions during England's recent white-ball tour in Sri Lanka, where he successfully led his team to victory in both the T20 and 50-over series. "It’s not been a very nice time of my life. It has just not been easy," he confessed, revealing the emotional toll these events have taken on him.
"All I do is hit a ball with a bat, and that's what I want to continue doing for the remainder of my career. I wish this situation had never happened, but now that it has, we need to focus on moving forward. I remain hopeful that things will settle down and improve in time."
Brook mentioned that he could spend hours discussing the lessons he's learned from this challenging episode. "I’ve definitely realized that being a captain comes with a great deal of responsibility," he elaborated. "As a leader, you cannot take this duty lightly. You must lead both on and off the field, and bear in mind that your actions can have serious consequences. It’s vital to stay alert and focused nearly all the time."
As England prepares to compete in the World Cup, they find themselves grouped with West Indies, Scotland, Nepal, and Italy. The team is seen as a strong competitor, especially trailing behind the overwhelming favorites, India. He added, "It’s peculiar; as a professional athlete, when you step onto the pitch as a batter, everything else seems to fade away, and all that matters is the cricket ball. Even in front of large crowds, sometimes you don’t even register the noise while batting. Luckily, I managed to get into that focused state and performed well."
After practicing at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday and Friday, England decided to skip training on Saturday to avoid the lengthy three-hour round trip to Navi Mumbai. The stadium is unavailable due to India’s opening match of the tournament against the USA, which starts at 13:30 GMT.
