In a world where death looms large, Mayhem's latest album, their seventh studio offering, plunges into the depths of mortality with an intensity that is both captivating and unsettling. This Norwegian band's revitalized sound showcases their unique approach to heavy music, reaffirming their status as icons in the realm of extreme metal.
Norway's influence on the extreme metal scene can be traced back to its long, gloomy winters and rich pagan heritage. These cultural aspects have nurtured a rebellious spirit, especially evident in the rise of black metal during the late 20th century. This environment has created fertile ground for genres like Death and Black metal to thrive, allowing bands to explore themes of darkness and despair.
As one of the trailblazers in the Norwegian Black Metal movement since the 1980s, Mayhem has maintained their prominence in the death and black metal landscape for more than forty years. They consistently release new material approximately every five to seven years. Their newest album, Liturgy of Death, has been described by Hungarian-born vocalist Attila Csihar as their "most commercially viable record" and the most thematically cohesive they have produced so far.
Each track on this album is rich with thematic depth and intricate lyrics, showcasing a seamless blend of Latin, English, and Norwegian. The content draws heavily from extensive research into the portrayal of death in classical literature, poetry, art, and architecture. In this latest work, Mayhem delves deeply into the concept of death from a religious standpoint, particularly focusing on the fear it evokes.
Musically, Mayhem has adeptly retained their relevance while embracing the distinctive sounds and techniques that define black metal—elements that are foundational to their genre. The album opens with a slow, atmospheric introduction that almost feels symphonic before quickly launching into a barrage of aggressive percussion. The track titled ‘Despair’ escalates even further, erupting into a relentless onslaught characterized by rapid-fire drums, piercing tremolo guitar riffs, and sonic textures reminiscent of the second wave of black metal.
Throughout the album, Csihar demonstrates his prowess as a premier metal vocalist, effortlessly transitioning between guttural growls, piercing shrieks, operatic wails, and otherworldly vocal expressions. Equally impressive is Necrobutcher's performance on bass; in a genre where the instrument often gets overshadowed, his bass lines are both prominent and impactful, adding to the overall chaos instead of being lost within it.
The tracks on Liturgy of Death are intricately layered, many incorporating church-like elements such as organ sounds and operatic choruses. There exists a profound irony in Mayhem’s incorporation of ecclesiastical tones, especially when juxtaposed against the controversial idols and iconography present in their music videos and album artwork. They cleverly subvert the aesthetics of organized religion, turning it against itself while also acknowledging its presence. After all, a significant portion of modern rebellion against religious norms stems from a fear of death and the guilt that faith can impose on its followers. Thus, to fixate on that which opposes is, paradoxically, to engage directly with the very essence of what it seeks to reject.
